Merhaba

On dakika yeter.

On dakikayı geçmez.

Çocuktan her birini incelemesini, farkları söylemesini iste. Ardından şu soruyu sor: "Hangisini alsaydın? Neden?"

On beş dakika, evdeki herhangi iki nesne yeterli.

Yapay zeka ortaokul okuma güçlüğünü gidermede umut verici

Hello

This week's bulletin focuses on the heart of primary school: grades 2, 3 and 4. From professions and continents to paper folding and cost thinking — every topic here has a home version too. Short and useful: that's the only goal.

Something practical for this week

Grade 2 — service jobs and production jobs

Draw two columns on a piece of paper. Label one "makes something" and the other "helps someone." Together with your child, go through jobs you've encountered or thought of today — baker, doctor, teacher, carpenter, driver — and sort them into the columns. Let your child speak first; only step in to guide when needed. Then ask: "Can a job be both?" and talk it through.

This activity sits right at the centre of the topic "the difference between service professions and production professions." Connecting an abstract distinction to concrete examples helps concepts stick. The act of sorting also exercises classification thinking.

If your child struggles, place the baker together and think out loud about why — that's modelling in action. If they finish quickly, switch to a guessing game: describe a job without naming it and let the other person guess.

Ten minutes is enough. All you need is paper and a pen.

Grade 3 — is asking a question weak or strong?

At dinner or before bed, play a short role-play. You set up a scenario: "Your teacher explained something in class. You didn't understand it, but your classmates seem to have. What do you do?" Listen to your child's answer. Then switch roles — you become the child, they become the teacher. Act out a moment of being too embarrassed to ask, and let your child advise you.

This brings the topic "is asking a question a sign of weakness or strength?" from the level of thought down to the level of experience. Role-switching works empathy and self-awareness at the same time. When your child gives you advice, they are quietly thinking it through for themselves too.

If your child finds it hard to defend asking questions, recall a mistake — real or made-up — that happened because no one asked. To go deeper, try: "Are there questions that aren't worth asking?"

Ten minutes, no materials needed.

Grade 4 — quality or cheap? thinking about cost

Find two similar objects around the house: two pens, two bags, two containers — one more durable, one more disposable. Ask your child to examine both and describe the differences. Then ask: "Which would you buy? Why?" Now do a simple calculation together: how often would the cheaper one need replacing, and how long would the other last — which one actually costs less in the end?

The topic "quality and durable product vs. cheap and short-lived — cost thinking" aims to make abstract economic reasoning tangible. This activity also reinforces the skill of building a comparison table in a hands-on way — two topics working at once.

If your child struggles, do the numbers yourself and let them handle only the "which is better?" decision. If they're ready for more, ask "how do you recognise quality?" and have them write the answer as a list.

Fifteen minutes, any two household objects.

What the curricula say

Let's look at grade 4 this issue. The topic "angle and symmetry in paper folding" sits under geometry and spatial thinking in Turkey's national curriculum. In the English national curriculum, the same age group approaches symmetry through hands-on manipulation of physical objects. The US Common Core at this level focuses on classifying shapes by their properties and understanding lines of symmetry. The Finnish approach tends to favour open-ended problem situations where children discover the steps themselves rather than following a given method. In the IB framework, the concept is explored through the conceptual lenses of "form" and "connection" — symmetry is questioned not just as a geometric rule but as a pattern that appears in nature and art. None of these is more correct than the others; each enters through a different door.

What's in the news

These are the education stories from this week that we think matter to parents. Each one links through to the original report.

Practical tips for parents at the start of primary school

Prof. Dr. Erol Duran shared concrete steps that parents can take at home to support their first-grade children through the school adjustment process. His recommendations include establishing a consistent sleep routine of around ten hours per night, setting up a study corner free from distracting devices, and limiting daily screen time. He also highlights that children who have mastered basic self-care skills such as using the toilet independently, dressing themselves, and tidying their belongings tend to feel more confident at school.

For parents looking to put these suggestions into practice, a few starting points stand out. Picking up a book instead of a phone models a love of reading for children more effectively than direct instruction. Asking "What made you laugh today?" rather than "How was school?" tends to open up more meaningful conversations. The adjustment period may take several weeks, and staying in close communication with the class teacher can make the transition smoother for the whole family.

Report calls for an artificial intelligence licence for high school graduates

The Turkish Education Association's think tank TEDMEM has published a report examining artificial intelligence in education. According to the report, 61 percent of young people between the ages of 17 and 27 cannot distinguish fabricated information generated by AI. TEDMEM recommends that students who demonstrate safe, ethical and self-regulated use of AI receive an "Artificial Intelligence Licence" upon completing high school. The report also finds that young people turn to AI for emotional support, and that 63 percent of them share this with no one.

These findings offer a useful starting point for parents to reflect on how their children use AI at home. It may be worth talking with your child about whether they question the information AI provides and who or what they turn to when they feel anxious or upset. According to the report, making human support accessible to young people has a more decisive impact than simply restricting technology use.

AI tools show promise in closing middle school reading gaps

Only thirty percent of eighth graders in the United States were proficient in reading in 2024, the lowest level in thirty years. As students move into middle school, the challenge shifts from learning to read to understanding what is read. Many students hit what researchers call a "comprehension wall," where they can decode words but struggle with complex sentences, unfamiliar vocabulary or challenging subject matter. AI-supported literacy tools are being explored as a way to provide individualized feedback and targeted support that a single teacher cannot realistically deliver to every student at once.

For parents of middle schoolers, this means it is worth paying attention to whether your child understands what they read, not just whether they can read the words aloud. Asking "what did that passage mean?" at home can reveal more than listening for fluency alone. A useful question for your child's school is what tools or strategies are being used to support reading comprehension at their grade level.

Six practical tips to ease the back-to-school transition

BBC gathered advice from experts on how families can make the return to school less stressful. Key suggestions include building a consistent morning routine, keeping a family calendar to track school events, and using open-ended questions when talking to children about their day. For children starting school for the first time, visiting the school building in advance and gradually bringing bedtimes forward are also recommended.

For parents, these tips point to a few straightforward changes at home. Packing school bags and laying out uniforms the night before can reduce morning stress. Questions like "what made you laugh today?" may help children open up more easily than asking what they did. Planning a weekly homework timetable and praising a child's effort rather than outcomes can also help keep them motivated.

On WordCub this week

WordCub's 11,465 topics and 66 modules are not tied to a single curriculum. A child working through "reading, writing and place value of three-digit numbers" in maths can see it framed through the Turkish national curriculum, or explore how Common Core approaches the same idea. For parents, this means something concrete: you can see how what your child learned today is structured in different countries — and shift the angle if needed. Leo prepares every topic the child selects as a personalised explanation, quiz and audio lesson. Five curriculum systems, all at home, with no ads and no data for sale.

Until next week

If you have ten minutes today, try one activity from the section above — the rest follows naturally. Next week we continue with grades 5, 6 and 7.
