Grade 9
Find a short passage from a thinker or writer — a paragraph from a textbook, a philosophy column, or anything your child has read before. Read it together. Then ask your child to answer three questions in order: "What is this text saying?", "What supports that claim?", "Do you agree, and why?" Answers can be spoken aloud; no writing necessary.
The grade 9 Turkish module in WordCub covers exactly this skill under the topic "summarising and evaluating a thinker's argument": identifying a claim, separating it from supporting detail, and comparing it with your own view. Practising this out loud before writing it down tends to help the skill stick faster, because your child is shaping the thought and hearing it at the same time.
If your child can't identify the main claim, read the passage together once more and start with just one question: "What is the author arguing most strongly?" If things move quickly, add a second passage and ask your child to compare the two arguments.
Ten to fifteen minutes. Paper and a pen are enough, though no writing is required.
Grade 10
Pick an object from the kitchen — a water bottle, a jar, a piece of fruit. Ask your child to describe its "mechanical energy": sitting on the table, falling to the floor, completely still. Then ask: "Did this object's energy appear from nowhere, or did it come from somewhere?" Let the conversation unfold from there.
This connects directly to the "mechanical energy" topic in WordCub's grade 10 Physics module. Anchoring an abstract concept in a physical object your child can hold makes it far more likely to stay in memory. Once a child can explain energy transformation in their own words, the formulas become much easier to work with.
If the concept feels unclear, narrow it down to one question: "Is it moving or still?" and build from there. If your child is comfortable, ask them to predict where energy is lost as the object moves.
Ten minutes. Any household object and a piece of paper are all you need; no formulas required.
Grade 11
Find two short texts on the same topic from different sources — a news article, an encyclopaedia entry, a textbook paragraph. Ask your child to compare not what each text says, but how it says it: which words are chosen, which information is foregrounded, and what is left in the background.
This maps directly onto the "comparative text analysis" topic in WordCub's grade 11 module. Noticing how word choice and structure shape meaning is at the core of critical reading — and it's a skill that transfers from exam passages to academic essays and beyond.
If finding two texts feels difficult, compare two sections within the same text. If your child finishes quickly, ask them to write a short paragraph summarising their observations.

High school students built a system to detect disasters early
Students Azra Nisa Yılmaz and Sevil Ardashiri from Beykent Okyanus College developed a software called K.A.L.K.A.N that can detect disasters such as earthquakes, fires, tsunamis and landslides in advance. Completed after four months of work, the system can warn of an earthquake 15 to 30 seconds ahead and detect a flame as small as a lighter's in approximately 0.6 seconds. During a disaster, the software guides people verbally, identifies alternative evacuation routes and notifies a designated building supervisor about anyone unable to exit. The project won silver and gold medals in the engineering category at international science competitions.
For parents, this is a practical opportunity to talk with children about what to do during a disaster. It may be worth reviewing whether basic procedures such as "drop-cover-hold on" are known at home. Asking the school administration whether the school has an early warning or voice guidance system in place would also be a reasonable step.

Gifted high school students spend summer building underwater robots
The underwater vehicle team at ARGEM High School has been working throughout the summer to prepare for the TEKNOFEST competition. Five students have spent only two weeks at home since June 26, staying in the school dormitory and working poolside for the rest of the summer. They come from four different cities and will compete in the final stage held in early September. Their system consists of a large underwater vehicle and a smaller one that works alongside it, and the team aims to complete both required tasks in a total of six minutes.
For parents, this story raises a few practical questions. If your child is drawn to a project or competition, it is worth discussing together how much of the summer holiday they are willing to dedicate to it. Balancing free time with focused work is something families can plan as a team. School playgrounds are being transformed into green spaces
The nonprofit Trust for Public Land is working to transform 420 schoolyards across 26 states from bare asphalt into greener play spaces. Renovated yards feature porous pavement, rain gardens and shaded structures that help reduce dangerous heat and flooding risk. Students, school staff and landscape architects take part in the design process together. Outside school hours, many of these yards are opened to local residents as community spaces.

Students across England receive their exam results
Hundreds of thousands of students in England, Wales and Northern Ireland received their A-level, Btec and T-level results. This year saw a record number of 18-year-olds accepted into university, with more than ever getting into their firm choice. Students like Emily in Hartlepool headed to school to find out their grades, with many moving on to university, degree apprenticeships or full-time work. Vocational qualifications such as T-levels are also growing in popularity as they offer a clear pathway into employment.
Even if your child is not yet sitting these exams, the pressure surrounding results day is a reality that touches all school-age students. Talking through different possible outcomes with your child now can help them feel more prepared. It is worth reminding them that university, apprenticeships and vocational routes are all valid options. Instead of asking "What if things go wrong?", try asking which path excites them most.
