Anlattıktan sonra "Peki başka bir örnek daha verebilir misin?" diye sor. İkinci örneği bulmakta zorlanırsa ipucu verme, bekle.
TR-MEB müfredatında "bir konuda örnek vererek anlatma" kazanımı, çocuğun bildiğini düşündüğü şeyi gerçekten anlayıp anlamadığını ortaya çıkarır. İkinci örneği bulmaya çalışmak, bilginin yüzeyde mi yoksa içselleştirilmiş mi olduğunu hem sana hem çocuğa gösterir. Bu süreç, konuşma dilinden yazılı anlatıma taşınacak düşünme köklerini atar.

4. sınıf

TR-MEB 4. sınıf müfredatında yer alan "müziğin toplumsal işlevi (tören, hasat, düğün)" konusu, çocuğun kendi kültürel deneyimini soyut bir kavramla — işlev — ilişkilendirmesini hedefler. Farklı türde müzikleri karşılaştırmak sınıflandırma becerisini ve sosyal bağlamı fark etme alışkanlığını çalıştırır.
Zorlanırsa tek bir müzik parçasıyla sınırlı kal, karşılaştırma yapma. Hızlı ilerlerse "Hiç müziksiz yapılan bir tören olabilir mi?" sorusunu ekle ve tartışın.
On beş dakika, kâğıt ve kalem. Müzik için telefon ya da radyo yeterli.
5. sınıf
YZ cevabını doğrulama alışkanlığı etkinliği: çocuğundan herhangi bir yapay zekâ aracına (varsa kullandığı) ya da sana, bir soruyu sormasını iste. Gelen cevabı birlikte okuyun. Sonra şu soruyu sorun: "Bu bilgiyi başka nereden doğrulayabiliriz?" Ansiklopedi, ders kitabı ya da daha önce öğretmenin söylediği bir bilgi — hangisi aklına gelirse. Birini seçip gerçekten kontrol edin.
TR-MEB 5. sınıf müfredatındaki "YZ cevabını güvenilir kaynakla doğrulama alışkanlığı" kazanımı, dijital okuryazarlığın temel taşlarından biridir. Çocuk bir bilgiyi "doğru çünkü okudum" yerine "doğru çünkü başka bir kaynakla örtüşüyor" diye değerlendirmeye başladığında eleştirel düşünce çalışmaya başlar. Bu alışkanlık erken yerleşirse ileride çok daha dayanıklı bir bilgi değerlendirme süzgeci oluşur.
Zorlanırsa doğrulama adımını sen yap, o izlesin ve farkı yorumlamasını iste. Hızlı bitirirse "Peki iki kaynak birbiriyle çelişseydi ne yapardık?" diye sor.
On dakika, yanında ders kitabı ya da bir çocuk ansiklopedisi olması yeterli. Yoksa birlikte kütüphanenin web sitesini hatırlayın.
Müfredatlar ne diyor
Bu sayıda 4. sınıfa bakalım. Aynı yaş grubuna farklı sistemler farklı pencerelerden bakıyor.
TR-MEB, 4. sınıfta "yerel bir sorunu haritalamak" gibi konularla çocuğu kendi çevresindeki somut gerçekliğe yönlendiriyor: mahallede bir çöp sorunu var mı, park güvenli mi? Bu yaklaşım, öğrenmeyi doğrudan yaşanılan yere bağlıyor.
UK müfredatı aynı yaşta "en eski medeniyetlere genel bakış — nerede ve ne zaman ortaya çıktılar" sorusunu soruyor. Yani bakış açısı yerel değil, tarihsel ve küresel. Çocuk kendi semtini değil, binlerce yıl önceki coğrafyayı zihninde kuruyor.
İki yaklaşım birbirinin karşıtı değil, birbirini tamamlayıcı. Biri "şimdi ve burası"nı anlamlandırıyor, diğeri "çok önce ve uzak"tan bağlam kuruyor. WordCub'ın beş müfredatı bir arada sunmasının pratik anlamı tam da bu: çocuk aynı yaşta her iki soruyla da karşılaşabiliyor.

Katı okul disiplin kuralları öğrenci sağlığını olumsuz etkiledi
İngiltere'nin Cornwall bölgesindeki bir okul, derse ilk ve son 15 dakikada tuvalet iznini yasaklamak da dahil olmak üzere sert disiplin kuralları uyguladı. Bu kurallara uymak isteyen 14 yaşındaki Amelia, su içmemeye başladı; annesi bu durumun kızının böbrek hasarı da dahil olmak üzere ciddi enfeksiyonlar geçirmesine yol açtığına inanıyor. Yüzlerce veli okul yönetimine karşı kampanya başlattı; sonunda okul ağını yöneten kurum, tüm okullarını başka yapılara devretme kararı aldığını duyurdu.
Çocuğunuz her gün okula giderken aldığı su şişesini boş mu yoksa dolu mu getiriyor, buna dikkat etmek artık anlam taşıyor. Okuldan eve döndüğünde kendini nasıl hissetttiğini, kurallara uyma kaygısı yaşayıp yaşamadığını sormak faydalı olabilir. Bir kural nedeniyle yemek yemekten, su içmekten ya da tuvaletten kaçındığını fark ederseniz bunu öğretmeniyle paylaşmak gerekebilir.
Lise Mezunlarının Büyük Çoğunluğu Gerçek Hayata Hazır Hissetmiyor
Yeni bir araştırma, lise mezunlarının mezuniyet sonrası yaşama yeterince hazırlanıp hazırlanmadığını sorguluyor. Araştırmaya göre son dönem mezunlarının çoğunluğu başladıkları yükseköğretim veya mesleki eğitim programlarını tamamlayamıyor; mezunların yarısından fazlası ise liselerinin onları yükseköğretim ya da iş hayatının zorluklarına yeterince hazırlamadığını söylüyor. This week's bulletin focuses on parents of students in grades 3, 4, and 5. Below you'll find one hands-on activity for each grade — no preparation needed, no special materials. Read it, try it, see what happens.
Something useful for this week
Grade 3
An activity on explaining with examples: at dinner, ask your child to tell you about something they learned recently — but with a condition: they must give at least one example. Just listen. Once they finish, ask: "Can you think of another example?" Let them work it out on their own; don't offer hints, just wait.
The TR-MEB curriculum for grade 3 includes a topic called explaining a subject with examples. This kind of exercise reveals whether a child truly understands something or has simply memorized it. Searching for a second example pushes that understanding to the surface — it's also the first step toward the kind of structured thinking that later shows up in written work.
If your child struggles, narrow the question: "What surprised you most at school today?" If they sail through it, switch roles — give a wrong example yourself and let them correct you.
Ten minutes, no materials. The dinner table is plenty.
Grade 4
An activity on the social function of music: play any recording you have at home — a lullaby, a wedding song, a sports anthem, a religious hymn, anything. Ask your child: "Why do people play this kind of music?" Then work through three questions together: Is it for celebration? For working together? For remembering something? Write the answers down.
The TR-MEB grade 4 curriculum covers the social function of music — ceremonies, harvests, weddings — and this topic asks children to connect a personal, everyday experience to an abstract idea: function. Comparing different types of music builds classification skills and a habit of noticing social context, both of which run through many subjects later on.
If your child finds it hard, stick to a single piece of music and skip the comparison. If they move quickly, add a harder question: "Could a ceremony work without any music at all?" Then discuss.
Fifteen minutes, paper and pen. A phone or radio is enough for the music.
Grade 5
An activity on fact-checking AI responses: ask your child to pose any question to an AI tool (if they use one) or simply to you. Read the answer together. Then ask: "Where else could we check this?" A textbook, an encyclopedia, something their teacher mentioned — whatever comes to mind. Pick one option and actually look it up.
The TR-MEB grade 5 curriculum includes a topic called developing the habit of verifying AI responses with reliable sources. When a child shifts from "it must be true because I read it" to "let me see whether another source agrees," critical thinking has started. Building this habit early creates a much more reliable filter for information over time.
If your child struggles, do the verification step yourself and ask them to describe the difference between what they found. If they finish quickly, ask: "What would we do if two sources disagreed with each other?"
Ten minutes. A school textbook or a children's encyclopedia nearby helps. If neither is at hand, remind each other where the library's website is.
What the curricula say
This issue, let's look at grade 4. Different systems approach the same age from very different angles.
TR-MEB directs grade 4 students toward their immediate surroundings through topics like mapping a local problem — litter, safety, a park. Learning is tethered to the place where the child actually lives.
The UK curriculum at the same age asks an entirely different question: an overview of the earliest civilisations — where and when did they emerge? The lens is historical and global. Instead of the neighbourhood, the child is mentally constructing geography from thousands of years ago.
Neither approach is wrong; they complement each other. One makes sense of "here and now," the other builds context from "long ago and far away." Having five curricula available in the same platform means a child at the same age can encounter both questions — not one or the other.

Strict school rules led to a student's health problems
A school in Cornwall, England, introduced tough disciplinary policies, including a ban on toilet visits in the first and last 15 minutes of lessons. To avoid breaking the rules, 14-year-old Amelia stopped drinking water during the school day; her mother believes this caused her daughter serious infections and scarring on her kidneys. Hundreds of parents campaigned against the trust running the schools, and the trust has since announced it will disband and transfer all its schools to other organisations.
As a parent, it is worth noticing whether your child comes home with a full or empty water bottle each day. Asking how they feel after school, and whether they feel anxious about following rules, can open a useful conversation. If you notice your child is avoiding eating, drinking or using the toilet because of a school rule, it may be worth raising this with their teacher.
Most High School Graduates Feel Unprepared for Life After Diploma
A new study questions whether high schools are adequately preparing students for life after graduation. According to the research, a majority of recent graduates do not complete the postsecondary education or training programs they begin, and slightly more than half say their high school did not properly prepare them for continuing education or work. Employers also report a significant mismatch between the skills they seek and those that job seekers actually possess.
For parents with school-age children, the practical takeaway is that a diploma alone may not be enough. Paying attention to whether your child is developing skills like curiosity, adaptability, communication and collaboration matters alongside academic achievement. A simple question at home — "What would you do differently next time?" — can help a young person begin to understand their own strengths and build the self-awareness that research suggests employers and colleges increasingly value.
